Santorini

Five ships all in port at the same time.
Two hour queues for the cable car

Alternate options?

Donkey or climb almost 600 steps

When I first drew back the curtains as we approached Santorini, I had a fleeting moment when I thought it strange that there was snow on top of the mountains, then I realized that snow was in fact the townships built high on the cliff tops, all appearing like a mass of snow in the distance.

Santorini was teaming with tourists.  We attempted to stroll the streets but the thousands of people jamming the streets, queuing for the cable car to return to their ships, or simply buying gifts in bulk was deterrent enough for us to retreat to the nearest restaurant with views all around and savour more delicious Greek fare.

Similar to yesterday, we chose the moussaka, which actually wasn't  quite as good as Katakolons, but the grilled calamari and taramasalata were worth the effort in getting there.  Kalamata olives and Greek salad, accompanied by a chilled local Rose was our brief experience of Santorini.

Surprise of the day : apart from the complete commercialism of the town, we were expecting to see the typical blue domes and white washed buildings depicted in every painting and postcard of Santorini.  But from our verandah perch high above the main street, we could not see any examples of same.
